Integrated Teak Wood Cultivation Practice

Introduction

In recent day’s intensive cultivation of forestry trees seen for natural timbers, Teak is one the best crop to cultivate for reasonably good profits from low and marginal fertile soils. Teak is the one of the most acclaimed timber plant in India due to its high durability, excellent characteristic veneer lanes and strength. It is preferred choice of wood for furniture making, interior decorations and in preparations of doors and windows. In India most of the Central states and few pockets in south India grow teak especially for its export quality timber. Micropropagated teak plants produces healthy root system helping the wood get matured as early as 12 years. It takes about 18-20 years in stumps to get the same quality timber with heartwood.

Soils

Teak can be grown in a wide range soils with PH range of 6.5- 8. Teak mostly prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soils. However marginally fertile soils also can be made suitable by applying more organic manures and compost/leaf litter etc .

Land preparation and planting

Plough soil thoroughly and level before marking for pits. Pits measuring 1 x 1 x 1 feet to be prepared and filled with FYM, 50 Gr single super phosphate and 1 kg of vermi compost. Healthy tissue culture raised teak plants can be planted at the rate of 800 plants per acre at spacing of 2.25 x 2.25 meters.

Early monsoon is the best time to plant, however teak can be planted around the year where good water source available .

Irrigation in Teak Farming

Irrigation has to be done for the first three years mainly during summer months. Apply a basal dose of NPK at the rate of 50 Gr per plant prior to irrigation. Weeding should be done thrice for the first three years of plantation.

Diseases and other crop management

Teak doesn’t attract any pest and diseases except few root born pests and nematodes, it’s advised to apply biological microbial agents like Beauveria bassiana and Paecilomyces lilacinus for naturally controlling the pests and nematodes.

We also recommend using “PHYTON” (An Atlantis phytotech product) a concentrated Vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza fertilizer during initial years of root development for lifelong protection of trees during drought conditions and also helps in absorbing nutrients from soil by expanding roots and mycelia deep into the soil from this plant-fungi association.

Intercropping

Intercropping in teak plantation during the first 3 years can be done.
The common intercrops are tomato, okra, chilly, maize, sesame & various vegetables.

Yield

First harvest may be done after 12 years. About 400 well grown, mature teak trees can be cut for selling the wood logs in open market. This practice allows the other 400 trees to get further thicker by utilising the sunlight and space among them.
At 15th year the other 400 trees can be harvested for good quality Grade-1 wood logs. This will fetch about 6000 Cu. feet of quality wood.
Teak is one of the safest and guarantee return crop due to its high demand in domestic and export markets thus making teak farming highly profitable farming.
